The Milwaukee Brewers scored eight runs with two outs in a single inning on Monday night, a feat never before recorded in World Series history. This offensive outburst allowed the team to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 at Tropicana Field. The victory gives Milwaukee a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven championship series.
The record-setting inning began in the sixth inning after the Brewers established a 2-0 lead earlier in the game. Christian Yelich and William Contreras hit consecutive one-out RBI singles in the third inning to set that initial advantage. In the sixth, the Brewers turned that modest lead into a decisive 7-0 margin through a sequence of hits on three consecutive pitches by Brice Turang, Garrett Mitchell, and Cooper Pratt.
Turang’s two-run single marked the second of seven straight two-out hits against Tampa Bay pitcher Freddy Peralta and relievers Cam Booser and Cole Sulser. The Brewers scored eight runs during a 17-pitch span to create a 10-run advantage. Jackson Chourio contributed two hits in that specific inning, part of his four-hit performance for the game.
The turning point of the series occurred when Booser faced Turang. Turang hit a 106 mph one-hopper that bounced past shortstop Taylor Walls. The ball glancing off the glove and into short center field allowed the run to score. Walls described the moment as a knife in the chest, noting that the play represented the critical shift in the game’s momentum.
Mitchell followed with an opposite-field RBI single through the hole left by Walls, who had shifted toward second base. Pratt then hit a double off the glove of diving third baseman Junior Caminero, scoring another run. Sal Frelick added an opposite-field double that hit the wall on a hop, scoring Pratt and forcing Booser from the mound. David Hamilton and Chourio each added RBI singles to close out the inning.
Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash adopted a chip and a chair mentality for the remainder of the series. He stated that the team has a seat at the table and must win the next game to stay alive. The Rays are the 25th team to fall behind 3-0 in a World Series, a deficit from which 21 teams were swept and four lost in five games. The only team to overcome a 3-0 hole in any best-of-seven postseason matchup is the Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series.
Caminero acknowledged that throwing to first base might have offered a better chance of retiring Contreras on a controversial play in the fifth inning. An umpire in the New York replay operations center reversed an initial forceout call, awarding Contreras an infield single that loaded the bases. Caminero said he knew his speed to first base was not an advantage in that situation, so he threw to second base instead.
Griffin Jax will start Game 4 on Tuesday. He stated that the team will forget the loss and try to sleep it off to return ready to fight. The previous World Series record for runs scored with two outs in an inning was seven, set by Boston in 2007 and matched by San Francisco in 2010. The Los Angeles Dodgers hold the all-time postseason record with 10 runs scored with two outs in an inning against Atlanta in the 2020 National League Championship Series.
