DeepSeek Secures Massive New Funding Amid US Regulatory Pushback

The Chinese AI lab has closed a $15 billion round shortly after Washington ordered federal agencies to remove its tools from internal systems.

The global race for artificial intelligence dominance has entered a new phase of aggressive expansion and strategic positioning. This development highlights how quickly capital is flowing into the sector despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.

DeepSeek has reportedly raised approximately $15 billion. This sum is equivalent to about 100 billion yuan. It stands as one of the largest funding rounds in China's tech history. Bloomberg reported the news on Wednesday. The timing is notable because it comes just two days after a new US directive. Washington ordered federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek’s AI technology from their systems. The move was driven by security concerns regarding the integration of foreign code.

Potential backers for this new capital injection include major Chinese industrial players. CATL, a leading battery manufacturer, is among the reported investors. Tencent, the tech giant that operates WeChat, is also listed as a potential participant. These entities bring significant resources and infrastructure capabilities to the table. Their involvement suggests a broader consolidation of tech interests in China.

This latest round follows a rapid series of financial moves by the company. In June, DeepSeek raised more than $7 billion. That deal valued the firm at $50 billion. By July, reports indicated the company was seeking another $1.5 billion. That potential round would have placed the valuation near $71 billion. There were also plans for a possible initial public offering in China as early as next year. The pace of these transactions shows a company moving quickly to secure its position.

The startup is based in Hangzhou. It is increasing its spending on AI infrastructure. The company is also developing open models for both domestic and international markets. This expansion continues even as it faces restrictions in the United States. The report notes that this growth could intensify competition among domestic rivals. DeepSeek is positioning itself as a key player in the regional tech landscape while looking outward.

The funding surge is part of a broader trend in global AI investment. Billions are pouring into companies worldwide to compete in this new economic frontier. China is a major hub for this activity. Moonshot AI, the developer behind Kimi, secured $2 billion in May. Its valuation reached $20 billion. Manus AI also raised more than $500 million earlier this month. Public markets are reflecting this enthusiasm as well. Zhipu AI and MiniMax both went public in Hong Kong in January. As of today, their market capitalizations stand at roughly $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng. Liang previously co-founded High-Flyer, a Chinese quantitative hedge fund. That firm helped finance the early development of DeepSeek. The startup gained significant global attention in early 2025. It released a free-to-use, open-weight reasoning model. This release challenged the dominance of established US AI companies. Liang retains an estimated 81.6% stake in the Chinese operating entity. This data comes from corporate ownership records analyzed by WireScreen.

The company has not yet commented on the new funding. DeepSeek did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The lack of an official statement leaves some questions open. However, the reported scale of the round suggests a definitive shift in strategy. The company appears prepared to invest heavily in its future regardless of external pressures.
