Valuation Spike: OpenAI Seeks $30 Billion

The AI giant is negotiating a massive private round that could set a new record for private companies.

$1.25 trillion. That is the staggering pre-money valuation OpenAI is reportedly targeting in its latest funding effort. The AI lab is moving to secure a new round of private capital before it heads to the public markets. This development signals a significant shift in strategy for the company.

The negotiations are reportedly led by Coatue alongside investors from the United Arab Emirates. The total amount being raised could reach up to $30 billion. Terms are still being discussed, so the final numbers may shift. This follows an earlier report from Bloomberg a month ago. That report suggested the valuation was closer to $1.4 trillion. Both figures place the company in unprecedented territory.

OpenAI has not commented on the reports. However, sources indicate the UAE portion of the deal may include more than just cash. There is talk of a separate agreement to secure additional computing capacity. This infrastructure support would be crucial for the lab as it scales its models. The company has been aggressive in its expansion since its last major raise in March.

Reaching a valuation above $1 trillion would make OpenAI the most valuable private company in history. It would break existing records set by other tech giants. Such a milestone would also raise the expectations for its upcoming initial public offering. The bar for success would be set extremely high for any public debut.

OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an IPO back in June. At that time, its post-money valuation was $852 billion. The new round would nearly double that figure if the terms hold. This rapid increase in value reflects the intense demand for AI technology. It also shows how quickly the market is re-evaluating the sector.

The high stakes of this round have implications for competitors as well. Anthropic, another major player, is also preparing for a public listing. Rumors suggest its S-1 filing could appear at any moment. Reports indicate Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its debut. It raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation. Many believed that would be its last private round before going public. The race to the top is now in full swing.
